What is FBCD®Style

Previously known as American Tribal Style®, or sometimes even as simply “ Tribal” , it is a modern, improvisational group style of dance created by FatChance Belly Dance® director, Carolena Nericcio. It is known for its poised, strong elegant lines, uplifted posture, and rich, colourful costumes.

It is a fusion dance form, inspired by folkloric dances of the Middle East, North Africa, Spain, and India. It is a uniquely modern creation that does not represent an “authentic” dance from any particular region.

FatChanceBellyDance Style uses movement cues and established steps to create group dances improvised on the fly. The dancers communicate via gesture and eye contact when dancing and improvising as a team. It fosters a supportive, community-oriented and inclusive environment where the group becomes more than the sum of its parts. This system also allows dancers from different groups or even parts of the world to dance together when meeting. With elaborate, colourful costumes, and exciting music, it showcases the dancers working together in cooperation.

Is this dance style for me?
“I’m too __”: You don’t need to have a particular age bracket or body type to dance, as it evolved from folkloric and social dances that are done by every body. I make a point to encourage body positivity and self belief in my classes.

“I don’t like dancing in public”
You don’t need to perform, and can just attend classes and do it for fun, with no pressure. Even if you eventually decide you want to perform, the focus is often on the group, not on any particular individual unless doing a solo.

What are the benefits?
Regular activity is great for your general health. Dancing can be a type of cardio, which happens to improve coordination and balance. While bellydancing, your pelvic floor gets a nice workout. Recent studies have pointed to group or partner dancing as also improving fine motor control and neurological connections, so it’s great for your brain too! And over all, it’s FUN.

Anything else?
The style works on connecting dancers, so it is great for social interaction. Posture and self image can improve too.
